SCHOOL LEVIES: Support children’s safety and wellbeing

I believe most citizens agree strong schools help build a prosperous, safe community with a sense of place. Even though the majority share these beliefs sometimes citizens forget to vote on stand-alone ballot measures.

Regrettably, the loss of a levy is a tremendous impact to a community that cannot be undone for quite some time.

I spent part of my law enforcement career as a School Resource Officer assigned to the Coeur d’Alene School District. At times I was overwhelmed by sadness for students left behind from their peers due to circumstances they could not control. The emotional and developmental needs of students are many. For those who have an opportunity to engage in a positive activity at school it can literally be a lifesaver.

Specific opportunities such as athletics, music, arts, student clubs or developmental programs for those slipping behind are critical to saving a kid from choosing a poor path in life. Police officers only have so many tools to try and help kids from choosing a life of crime. Our schools are one of those tools. Please vote YES on March 14 for the levies in your school districts, and ensure our next generation is well cared for.
