| July 17, 2023 1:10 AM

SANDPOINT — Kolbe Coey went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored as the top-seeded Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U team beat the second-seeded Northern Lakes Mountaineers 5-3 in the semifinal game of the Class A Area A (district) tournament Sunday at War Memorial Field.

Northern Lakes came back later Sunday to eliminate the third-seeded North Idaho Lakers 9-1 to remain in the title hunt.

Coeur d’Alene will play Northern Lakes (26-10) in the championship game today at noon. If the Lums lose, an if-necessary title game would follow.

Earlier, the Lakers edged the fourth-seeded Orofino Merchants 8-7 in a loser-out game.

In the semifinal, Coey hit an RBI triple in the fourth inning to increase the Lums’ lead to 4-2.

Caleb Mason’s RBI single with two out in the seventh pulled Northern Lakes within 5-3. But with runners on first and third, reliever Hudson Kramer got the next batter to pop out to second to end the game.

Later Sunday, Sam Pemberton struck out five, walked none and allowed three hits for Northern Lakes. The lone run he allowed was unearned.

Tadhg Ellwood went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Mountaineers. He had an RBI single in the first inning, a two-run double in the second, and an RBI triple in the sixth.

Andrew Horn was 3 for 4 and scored three runs.
