TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT CENTER: We’re already being monitored

The proposed traffic management center will observe traffic via video cameras placed at critical arterials. This helps to identify problems impeding traffic and allows for coordinated interagency responses including emergencies. It serves the purpose of ensuring the public reaches their destination safely, efficiently and reliably.

Previously the Cd’A Press reported 130 people attended a meeting of the KMPO to object to a traffic report. Apparently, a report no one had read at the time regarding this proposed traffic monitoring technology. However, all were in opposition to the traffic management center for reasons including invasive surveillance, “smart” cities, government overreach and more as reported. A more recent discussion was held at a local church labeled a town hall where three of the KMPO members attended. The comments were similar. “We are going to be spied on and that data will be stored.” “We live in an era of deceit and betrayal.”

Technology is neutral. The use or misuse of technology depends on people acting consistent with our laws. If we are seriously concerned about traffic being monitored to learn about us, I might suggest we never access our computers, iPads or cell phones ever again. “Hey Siri,” should never be spoken again. I trust the KMPO to use traffic information for its intended purpose more than any social media platform which places us into like-minded groups.

Our leaders may be honorable or deceitful. We make choices. We get the leadership we demand. Blaming technological advances for any shortcomings would be a comedy if it wasn’t an actual tragedy. By the way, no one actually wants to watch us. We simply are not that important.
