PREP WRESTLING: Trojans do it right, win 11th Rumble title in 13 years

COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls junior Tyson Barnhart is just the type of kid that coach Pete Reardon roots for.

“He just does everything right, both on the mat and the classroom,” Reardon said. “He works so hard at what he does, and does things the right way. And you’ve got to respect that.”

So facing an early hole against Buhl’s Bowen Brunson, a two-time state 3A champion, what’s Barnhardt to do.

Barnhardt caught Bowen in a cradle, earning a pin in 5 minutes, 22 seconds to capture the 132-pound title at the 13th annual North Idaho Rumble on Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Tyson went out and gave up the first takedown,” Reardon said. “But Tyson just clawed his way back into it. He’s just a tough kid.”

Post Falls had seven champions, Rider Seguine (106 pounds), John Rudebaugh (160), Jose Laguna (170), Keanyn DeGroat (182), Gentry Smith (195), Barnhart and Trevor Miller (220) en route to the tournament title, the program’s 11th in the tournament’s history.

“This tournament is a great measuring stick right before the postseason,” Reardon said. “Now, we’ll get back into the wrestling room, sharpen some things and get back to work.”

DeGroat pinned Garrett Leonard of Lake City in the 182-pound title match.

“Keanyn is really coming into his own lately,” Reardon said. “He’s always been tough, but never really put it all together. But today, he really came into his own.”

Lake City senior Zach Macdonald beat Bonners Ferry’s Brandon Williams 21-5 in the finals at 113 pounds.

“Zach’s always on the attack and looking to score points,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “He gives up some points sometimes, but he’s just fun to watch honestly.”

Blaine Leonard was runner-up at 138 for Lake City, which finished sixth with 125.5 points.

“Right now, we’re starting to look how we want to heading into the last part of the season,” Owen said. “The guys are wrestling aggressive and hard. Hopefully we can start to put it all together in the next couple of weeks.”

Rocco White (third at 98), Dax Larsen (third at 138), Mason Rogers (sixth at 113), Will Rossi (fifth at 120), Brett Meyers (sixth at 145), Brooklyn Anderson (third in girls 145) and Cara Brown (second in girls 152) also placed for Coeur d’Alene, which finished seventh with 120 points.

“It was a great tournament with really good competition,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “I thought our team competed well. We’re getting better, but still making some mistakes we need to improve on.”

Andrew Duke (third at 106), Christian Troumbley-Karkowski (fourth at 145), Calvin Hinds (third at 182) and Jorden Tyler (sixth at 195) placed for Sandpoint.

In the girls bracket, Coeur d’Alene’s Alyssa Randles (126), Post Falls’ Abigale Piper (152) and Sandpoint’s Sylvia Becker (165) and Grace Balch (235) claimed individual titles.

Randles was named girls co-Most Outstanding Wrestler along with Moscow's Skyla Zimmerman, who won at 120 pounds.
