STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Crowded at the top ... Trojans third, but well within striking distance in 5A tournament

| February 25, 2023 1:30 AM

NAMPA — With five state 5A championships as coach, you’d think Post Falls coach Pete Reardon has seen it, felt it and knows how to approach championship Saturday from any kind of angle.

Today, he’ll see if his Trojans can make the jump again for that elusive sixth title.

Post Falls, with five wins in the state 5A semifinals at the Ford Idaho Center on Friday, sits third with 210.5 points, but just 9.5 points from leader Meridian and seven back of second-place Nampa.

“You’d think as a coach, the more you’ve been to, you get used to the nerves,” Reardon said. “But I’m just as nervous as the kids. Between being excited for tomorrow, and nervous for them, it’s a lot. But the kids and coaches have worked so hard to get here.”

Senior Rider Seguine (106 pounds), junior Tyson Barnhart (132 pounds) and seniors Jose Laguna (170), Gentry Smith (195) and Trevor Miller (220) advanced to the finals for Post Falls. Seguine is a defending champion, Barnhart a champion as a freshman. Laguna, Smith and Miller are in the finals for the first time.

“All these guys are fairly experienced,” said Reardon, who also has eight wrestlers in the consolation bracket. “With Jose, Gentry and Trevor, they’re experienced, but it’s their first trip to the finals. All of them have tough matches, but it’s going to be exciting.”

Four of the five finals matches feature Post Falls against opponents ahead of them in the team standings. Nampa has seven wrestlers in the finals, as does Meridian, with the 182-pound final a head-to-head bout.

“We said it was going to need to be a complete team tournament,” Reardon said. “We’ve got eight guys fighting in the morning for placement, so it’s going to get interesting.”

In the girls tournament, Coeur d’Alene senior Alyssa Randles (126) and junior Cara Brown (152) advanced to the finals, along with Post Falls senior Abigale Piper (145).

“We kind of expected Alyssa to be in the finals, and she just dominated her opponent in the semifinals,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Cara had the top seed and controlled the match, which was pretty awesome to see. She did a good job last year and didn’t wrestle well at the end of the year due to injury last year. But she’s come a long way in the last two years and wrestled tough all year.”

Viking senior Dax Larsen, a state runner-up last year, lost in overtime in his semifinal match at 138 pounds.

“It was a heartbreaker,” Moffat said. “He had a good shot in overtime, but the guy who defended it held on. Both guys wrestled a great match.”

Lake City senior Zach Macdonald (113), a defending champion, and sophomore Garrett Leonard (182) lost in the semifinals.

“Both of those guys just ran into really good kids,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Neither had their best match by any means, but hopefully they’ll bounce back and get third.”

Lake City junior Madi Cook (132) remained in contention for placing in the girls tourney with an overtime win in the third round of the consolation bracket.

“She was leading 6-0, then got called for stalling and got put on her back,” Owen said. “The match probably took a few years off my life and she ended up in overtime when she didn’t need to be there. It was her first state tournament, and sometimes nerves get to you. After that stall call, it kind of threw her off and she felt like she had to do something different, when she probably didn’t. But I’m proud of her for getting it done in overtime.”

4A: Lakeland sophomore Jaren Knopp advanced to the placing round at 106 pounds for the Hawks, who are tied for 16th with 33 points.

Defending champion Minico leads the tournament with 217.5 points, followed by Caldwell with 180.

3A: Freshman Wyatt Carey (98), sophomore Paul Sundstrom (113), senior Stryker Huston (120) and junior Luke Schell (182) fell in the semifinals for Timberlake, which is 11th with 51 points.

South Fremont, winners of the last three state 3A titles, leads with 252 points.

2A: New Plymouth leads the tournament with 156 points.
