PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: St. Maries rallies past Timberlake

SPIRIT LAKE — The St. Maries Lumberjacks rallied from six points down with less than two minutes left to edge the host Timberlake Tigers 60-59 in nonleague play Wednesday night.

“They pressed us, and we didn’t take good care of the ball,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said of the final moments.

Greyson Sands, who finished with 25 points, made two free throws with roughly 30 seconds left to put St. Maries (15-5) up 58-57. After a Timberlake (8-11) turnover, Sands made two more free throws for a three-point lead.

The Tigers missed a 3-pointer for the tie, then got a putback at the buzzer.

Sands made three 3s and 10 of 14 free throws for St. Maries.

Timberlake was 6 of 13 from the line.

“We took them to overtime at their place (a 72-64 loss), and it came down to free throws there too," LaFountaine said.

Timberlake travels to Bonners Ferry on Friday for the Intermountain League and regular-season finale for both teams.

St. Maries plays host to Saturday’s Priest River-Grangeville winner on Monday at 1 p.m. in a semifinal game of the 2A District 1-2 tournament.
