NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinal men, women sweep at fall-opening golf tourney

BURLINGTON, Wash. — North Idaho freshman Josh McCartin tied for third place in the Skagit Valley NWAC Cardinal Classic, leading the Cardinals to a two-shot win over Bellevue in the fall opener at Avalon Golf Links.
McCartin shot a 4-over-par 148 (74-74) for NIC, which shot a 297 in the second round after trailing Bellevue by one shot (307 to 308) after the first round.
Freshman Hardy Johnson was fifth (76-73—149), freshman Caden Gambini (77-76—153) tied for eighth and sophomore Jamen Parsons (80-74—154) was 10th for NIC.
Freshman Lauryn Bulger led the NIC women with a fourth-place finish with a 85-86—171. Sophomore Navy Wood was fifth (85-87—172), freshman Sofia Lippello seventh (90-86—176) and sophomore Bella Gopwani (86-95—181) was 10th.
NIC will compete in the Battlin’ Bears Invitational next Sunday through Tuesday at Yegen Golf Course in Billings, Mont.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomores Taylin Rowley and Kayla Freed had six kills each for the Cardinals in a 25-15, 25-22, 25-14 win over the Warriors in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Christianson Gymnasium.
Abbey Neff, a sophomore from Lakeland High, had 20 assists and nine digs and sophomore Nicolette Cathey 11 digs for NIC (14-3, 5-0 NWAC), which hosts Big Bend on Friday.
Jaycie Pratt, a freshman from Timberlake High, had four kills and five digs for Walla Walla (3-11, 1-3).
