Dean Stephens Marcus, 73

| September 25, 2022 1:00 AM

Dean Stephens Marcus passed away unexpectedly from fall-related injuries on Sept. 9, 2022.

Born Jan. 2, 1949, Dean grew up in Glendale, Calif., where his family owned Marcus Electric for 40+ years. With his wife, Mary Wright Marcus, Dean moved to Hayden, Idaho, in 1984 and spent over 37 years enjoying life in North Idaho.

After working various construction jobs, including time at Keystone Lighting, Dean became a volunteer for the Northern Lakes Fire Protection District in Hayden. Dean was proud to serve the District as a firefighter, a Fire Commissioner, an EMT-B, a fire inspector/lieutenant, Fire Marshall and, ultimately, as Fire Chief from 2007 until he retired in 2016. Dean was very proud of his 23+ years at Northern Lakes and deeply loved and respected his fire family.

In 2021, Dean and Mary moved to Carlsbad, Calif., to be closer to their children and other family. Although they did not have a lot of time together since his return to California, the time they did have will be forever cherished. Dean finally had time to "do nothing", a pastime he thoroughly enjoyed.

Dean is survived by his wife, Mary Wright Marcus of Carlsbad, Calif., daughters Collette Sobray and Janine Marcus and grandson Matthew Sobray of Santa Clarita, Calif., step-daughter Laura Billau Cary, dear friend Paul Cary, and their children Nicholas, Jett and Blake of Encinitas, Calif., sisters-in-law Kathy Marcus of Hayden, Idaho and Catherine Wright of Oceanside, Calif. as well as other extended family and friends.

It was Dean's wish that no service be held. In lieu of flowers, you may choose to make a donation in his name to the Northern Lakes Professional Firefighters' Benevolent Fund or a charity of your choice.
