LIBRARY: Some working to take away others’ rights

How frustrating to read that our library lost a great employee, Delaney Daly, no thanks to relentless ‘parental pressure’ (that is naming it kindly). Too bad the board did not respond to the article making one wonder if they offered any support.

During the last three years of crazy, the Coeur d’Alene library has been a joy and a lifeline. Parents, if you do not want your children under legal age of 18 to access certain materials, fine. Talk to your kids. Respectfully refrain from demanding the removal of those materials available to me and others based on your religious and/or political beliefs.

Anyone wishing to control library content might want to obtain and read the book “Educated” by Tara Westover. The young author grew up in Idaho, raised in a survivalist religious family who sheltered her from so many things in the world, including the education that would prepare her for adult life in the real world, separate from her family. Thankfully, by all odds, she made it.

Suppression rarely works. If anything, it often leads to the exact opposite, the desire to explore the forbidden. Ask anyone who’s been there.
