PREP ROUNDUP: Lake City captures league title

| October 7, 2022 1:15 AM

• VOLLEYBALL

COEUR d’ALENE — After a slow start in the first set, the Lake City Timberwolves roared back to beat the Post Falls Trojans 20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 on Thursday night at Lake City to capture the Inland Empire League title in the regular season finale for both teams.

It was the first outright league title for Lake City (17-3, 8-1 IEL) since the Timberwolves won the 5A IEL title in 2018. Lake City shared the 5A IEL title with Coeur d’Alene in 2019.

“Super proud of them; we’re just stoked to be able to play at home through districts,” said Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg, who was a T-Wolf assistant from 2017-19 before taking over as head coach in 2020.

Lake City will play host to No. 4 seed Lewiston next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Post Falls (22-6, 7-2), which won the last two league titles, will be the No. 2 seed to regionals, and play host to No. 3 Coeur d’Alene next Saturday at 1 p.m. in a first-round match.

Ella Hosfeld had 17 assists, 14 digs and three aces for Lake City. Aubrey Stennett added 14 assists, four kills and four aces, Allie Bowman 17 digs, Payton Peugh 11 kills and two aces, Emberlyn Reynolds five kills and two blocks.

“I just think we needed a moment to calm our nerves, and get going,” Kleinberg said of the first set. “We watched a good amount of video on them, where to serve the ball and where to send the ball on free balls, and make them move.”

Kylie Munday had 14 kills, 21 assists, 15 digs and three aces for Post Falls. Jenna Sarff had 14 kills, two blocks and two aces, Carleen Codd 17 assists, Sam Anderson three blocks, Vanessa Kison 12 digs, Trinity Byrne two aces.

Lewiston

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Vikings avenged an earlier loss to the Bengals with a 26-24, 25-22, 25-21 victory in the Inland Empire League and regular season finale at Viking Court.

“We did not play well down at Lewiston,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “We played well Tuesday (in a five-set loss to Post Falls) and today, so that’s a positive going into districts.”

Madi Symons had nine kills, three blocks, nine digs and two aces for Coeur d’Alene (16-8, 4-5 IEL). Paisley Goings added seven kills, Lizzy Hardy 12 assists and two aces, Bailey Jaworski 12 assists, Gracie Legg 13 digs, Kiley Hart and Gia Janke three blocks each.

“We served well, and that got them out of their offense,” Curtis said. “Our ball control was a little better tonight, so we could run our offense.”

Coeur d’Alene will be the No. 3 seed and travel to No. 2 Post Falls next Saturday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament.

Lewiston is 3-10, 2-7.

“Tonight was a special night for the girls, as they weren’t only playing for themselves, they were playing for someone else too,” St. Maries coach Rachele Fischer said. “It was our Pink Out — Breast Cancer Awareness game, where each player, both JV and varsity, dedicated their game to a family member or friend whose life was changed by breast cancer. With the help of our amazing community and the players, we used the game to raise awareness and money for our local organization BetterCare. We appreciate Timberlake for participating in the event with us. The win means something, but this is what it’s about. Family, friends, teammates, a community and the support you find when you least expect it, and need it the most.”

BONNERS FERRY — Maddie Daigle and Rebekah Hines each recorded hat tricks for the Panthers in an Intermountain League win over the Badgers.

“We struggled with some first touches a bit, but overall didn’t let that stop our effort toward the goal,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “The way Bonners Ferry defends forced us to really work the ball around through good passes. There was not a lot of space to send a through ball, so we had to be more creative and precise. Not every moment of the game was great, but there were some great connecting moments that led to excellent finishes on goal.”

We played the ball back to move it forward really well, which was something we haven’t done this season. We got some good touches on the ball and played pretty well.”
