LOAN FORGIVENESS: Things are different today

In response to Karen’s letter: What is “fair” to you? I am sure the people who are receiving loan forgiveness, myself included, would have loved to have the four-year cost of a degree be $6,000 (adjusted for inflation) as it was in the ’80s. That would have been fair. Many of us held full-time jobs while going to school, just like it was “back in the day.”

Why couldn’t we pay off our tuition like the prior generation could? I wonder. I guess it was all the avocado toast. It would be nice to support a family of six with a single income household and retire from the same company you’ve worked for the last 40 years as it was in the past. That would have been fair. It would sure be great if wages kept up with inflation so those of us with loans could indeed pay them back instead of lining corporate pockets. That would be fair. If you feel you are being treated “unfairly,” maybe you need to look at your politicians and how this happened in the first place? Loan forgiveness is the symptom, you need to look at treating the disease. The system we live in was designed to benefit one group of people, and we aren’t in it.
