VOTING: Democrats left out

| May 18, 2022 1:00 AM

My concern is about voting rights in Idaho. With a closed primary, as we currently have, those of us not represented by the majority party are disenfranchised. This currently affects registered Democrats but it could switch and affect Republicans in the future.

Democracy is supposed to mean 1 person, 1 vote. In the past, folks such as Catholics and Jews, women, folks of color, white men not owning enough property, were not allowed to vote. Now, in Idaho, Democrats fall into this category.

Other states are narrowing the field of those entitled to vote and choose who represents them by restrictive measures that would have civil rights leaders in the past, to roll over in their graves.

Many “protected” folks fail to recognize how at risk the democracy that we hold dear is, and how much the U.S. is coming to resemble autocratic countries like Russia, Hungary and Turkey.

My prayer is that individuals will wake up and take the necessary steps to protect democracy.
