CONSTITUTION: Point on Christianity

| May 15, 2022 1:00 AM

Linda Barron’s letter that the founding fathers were devout Christians and built the nation to be a Christian Nation is incorrect. Religious references in the Constitution are vague and open to interpretation but do not exclusively support Christian belief.

What is not vague and open to interpretation is that the First Amendment specifically and intentionally created a separation of church and state. The 14th Amendment also prohibits the making of any law that advances, or prohibits, any one religion.

Furthermore, the Constitution expressly prohibits a religious test requirement for public office.

To say this country was built as a “Christin Nation” is to ignore the very direct actions our founding fathers took to unsure a secular government created by the people, for the people.
