PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland swept; Sandpoint earns top seed

| May 6, 2022 1:10 AM

BASEBALL

SANDPOINT — Sean Tierney and Garrett Love drove in runs in the nightcap for the Lakeland Hawks, who led 2-1 until Sandpoint tied it in the sixth inning and won it on a walk-off single by Auggie Lehman with one out in the seventh as the Bulldogs beat the Hawks 3-2 at Memorial Field on Thursday, giving Sandpoint the top seed to the 4A Region 1 tournament starting next week.

Sandpoint won the opener 12-2, and earned the right to host the first day of regionals on Tuesday.

Moscow (9-11, 4-4 4A IEL) and Lakeland (4-15, 3-5) play next Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Sandpoint in a loser-out game. The winner plays Sandpoint (8-12, 5-3) at 5 in the first game of a best-of-3 championship series.

Payden Wysong struck out five and allowed two runs in the second game for Lakeland, which would have earned the top seed with a sweep. A split would have created a three-way tie for first in the three-team league.

“We had a hard time competing in the first game and couldn’t make the adjustments necessary to play good baseball,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “I was proud of how we turned the page and played pretty good baseball in the second game. I couldn’t be more proud of how Payden pitched. He was extremely efficient and did a great job of keeping Sandpoint off balance. We just couldn’t give him the run support or get the key hits we needed with guys on base.”

ST. MARIES — The Central Idaho League doubleheader will not be made up because the matchups for next week's 2A District 1-2 tournament at Orofino would not have been affected.

On Monday, St. Maries (3-9, 1-3 CIL) will play Grangeville (5-12, 2-2) at 11 a.m. Orofino (12-5, 4-2) plays the loser at 1 p.m. and the winner at 3.

If one team goes 2-0, that team is the district champ and advances to state. The team that goes 1-1 advances to a state play-in game, and the 0-2 team is eliminated.

If all three teams go 1-1 on Monday, they’ll do it all again on Tuesday.

ST. MARIES — Addyson Stewart singled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth, and Lexi Fuller delivered a two-run single later in the inning to give the host Lumberjacks a cushion in the first game of a Central Idaho League doubleheader with the Bulldogs.

The second half was rained out, but won’t need to be made up as it doesn’t affect seeding for next week’s 2A District 1 tournament.

Taci Watkins struck out 11 in a two-hitter for St. Maries (14-3, 5-0 CIL), which will host the district tournament starting Monday.

Grangeville (6-14, 0-5) will be third seed, and will open vs. No. 2 seed Orofino (14-8, 3-3) in the tourney opener Monday at 11 a.m. St. Maries will play the loser of that game at 1 p.m., and the winner of that game at 3.

If one team goes 2-0, that team is the district champ and advances to state. The team that goes 1-1 advances to a state play-in game, and the 0-2 team is eliminated.

If all three teams go 1-1 on Monday, they’ll do it all again on Tuesday.
