PREP TRACK AND FIELD: District 1 All-Star Meet set for today
The top 16 individuals and eight relays in District 1 will compete in the annual District 1 all-star track and field meet today at Post Falls High starting at 2:30 p.m.
Among the competitors will be Post Falls High senior Sammie Wood, who has the top time in the girls 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 53.64 seconds according to Athletic.net.
Wood has signed to compete in track and field and cross country at Boise State next fall. She is second in the 400 (57.70), 800 (2:12.74) and 3,200 (10:34.64).
Coeur d’Alene senior Lilly Phenicie is second in the discus (135 feet, 3 inches).
During the meet, two athletes — Caleb Cazier and Gretchen (Bailey) Mann — as well as Dave Rounds will be inducted into the meet’s hall of fame at approximately 3:55 p.m.
Cazier was an integral part of Timberlake's 2004 boys state track and field championship, the program’s first. As a junior, he won the 400 at the state meet, winning in 49.65 seconds. In his senior year, Cazier ran through a torn hamstring, qualifying for the 100, 200 and 400 finals. He won the 400 in 49.75 and anchored the 4x400 team to the state title. Cazier owns the school record in the 400 (49.65) and 4x400 relay (3:27.28). Following high school, Cazier competed at Boise State, winning the Western Athletic Conference indoor 800 as a senior. He went on to get a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of Utah, where he resides with his wife and two daughters.
Mann, a 2004 graduate of Wallace High, won the state 2A long jump as a junior (17 feet, 1 inch). She also holds the District 1 all-star meet record in the event at 17 feet, 3 ½ inches and also holds records at Wallace High in the 100 (12.44 seconds), 200 (26.2) and long jump (18-0). Upon graduation, Mann went to the University of Idaho and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Finance. She resides in Cataldo with her husband — Kyle — and three children.
Rounds coached the Wallace High track and field program for 21 years, in addition to 27 years as football coach before retiring from coaching in 2015. Rounds died in October at the age of 64 while duck hunting.
Rounds coached multiple state qualifiers and state champions Bailey, Dana Streeter (1996 100 hurdles and long jump), Dylan Hill (2010 1A 400) and the A-3 4x100 team of Craig Zanetti, Jake Sprute, Steven Jemmings and Zach Penney.
