ASSESSOR: The final straw

| May 4, 2022 1:00 AM

I worked for the Assessor’s Office for more than 40 years and recently retired. As an employee under Bela Kovacs, I attended the candidate forum April 20 at the Altar Church to hear Bob Scott and to support my fellow employees who had filed a petition of no confidence against Kovacs on April 11. I too signed the petition as I am under contract with the Assessor’s Office as a consultant.

I submitted a Letter of Termination which stated, “After reading the derogatory, inflammatory and misleading information on your election website, I am unable in good conscience to continue with the Independent Contractor Agreement.” Since his first posting, substantial changes have been made to his website and his comments praising staff at the April 20 meeting is a complete contradiction of the comments he had previously stated on his website.

As the meeting went on, staff and a manager noticed Bela’s family strategically placed behind them, recording them. Not recording the meeting but recording the staff. After the meeting, the upset manager asked Kovac’s wife why they were recording staff. Her response was “why shouldn’t we?” This is the exact attitude and scrutiny that the staff have been putting up with for two years. No trust or respect for the employees.

After working for/with seven Assessors over the past 40 years, my one burning question is, how low will Kovaks and his camp go?
