SOFTBALL

RATHDRUM — In a game that featured seven home runs — and a doubleheader that had 13 — it was a ground ball single that lifted the Lakeland Hawks past the visiting Timberlake Tigers 11-10 in the first game of a nonleague twinbill.

Kyleigh Dyer’s single to left field scored courtesy runner Maddy Cheney from second base with two out in the bottom of the seventh, lifting Lakeland past Timberlake.

In the second game, Alexis Hanna doubled with two out in the bottom of the seventh to score Olivia Staudinger from first base as the Hawks edged the Tigers 7-6.

In the first game, Payton Sterling’s three-run homer in the second inning was the first of back-to-back-to-back shots by Lakeland (9-11). Emma Avalos and Cienna Walls followed with solo homers as the Hawks built an 8-0 lead.

Ashley Grantham hit a two-run homer in the third for Timberlake (17-4), and Dyer answered with a solo shot for Lakeland.

In the fourth, Tapanga Rojas hit a two-run homer for Timberlake, and Logan Walsh hit a grand slam for the Tigers to tie the game at 9.

Sterling finished with six RBIs, Walsh five.

In the second game, Lakeland connected for five homers, including a two-run shot in the fourth by Dyer. Walsh hit a three-run homer in the third for Timberlake, which led 6-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

RATHDRUM — The visiting Timberwolves scored 10 runs on just two hits in the third inning in the nonleague win over the Hawks on senior day for Lakeland.

Cooper Reese hit a two-run double in the third for Lake City (9-7), which benefited from five walks, four hit batsmen and an error in the inning.

Chris Reynolds, Braeden Newby and Ethan Taylor teamed on a one-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Timberwolves.

"We threw a bunch of kids that really hadn’t pitched much this year, and they pitched really well," Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. "And we got a lot of kids in. Real productive day."

Sean Tierney had the lone hit for Lakeland (4-13), a one-out single in the first on a ball that was popped up to center field, but was blown back in toward shortstop and fell — a ball Manzardo thought should have been caught.

“It was frustrating because we started out well but couldn’t keep it going,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “It’s hard to come back on a good team after you’ve given up so many free runs. I like the way Jacob Schaffner settled in on the mound after that third inning. We just have to start gaining some trust in our own abilities and confidence all around. If we can do that, then I like our chances.”
