SPOKANE — Coeur d’Alene sophomore Connor Judson won a championship in No. 2 boys singles Saturday at the 75th Inland Empire Tournament at Whitworth University.

Judson, who did not drop a set in the two-day tourney, defeated Alexander Garcia from West Valley-Yakima 4-1, 4-3 in the championship match, after beating Brennon Roshetko of Ferris 6-1 in the semifinals.

Modified scoring was in effect Saturday due to the poor weather and time constraints. All consolation matches were canceled for the day. Matches were played indoors at Whitworth.

CJ Giao and Gabe Danser of Coeur d’Alene finished third in No. 2 boys doubles. They lost to Joe Robi and Nolin Kavon of Mead 6-0 in the semifinals, then won their third-place match by default over a team from West Valley-Yakima.

Turner Cox of Coeur d’Alene finished fourth in No. 1 boys singles. He lost to Jeremy Lasalle of Ferris 6-5 (5) in the semifinals, then fell to Jackson Clary of Kennewick 6-2 in the match for third and fourth.

Meanwhile, the Sandpoint players still alive in the consolation bracket at the tournament received disappointing news once they arrived at Mt. Spokane High.

The consolation side of the tournament was canceled due to rain.

“I felt bad that they had gone there and didn’t get to play,” Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson said. “So I stayed and hit with (Aubrey) Knowles (part of a No. 3 mixed doubles team) and (Maise) Brazil (who was in No. 2 girls singles) for about an hour.”

Sandpoint’s No. 3 boys doubles team of Jacob Dawson and Anthony Ramires won its semifinals match against Richland to advance to the finals, where they fell to Mead to finish in second place.

“They were pretty excited,” Anderson said. “It’s not that often we have players reach the finals of this tournament.”

Clark Fork’s tennis duo of Jamie Herrick and Emily Meyers went two-and-out following losses to Pullman and Ridgeline.
