PREP TRACK AND FIELD: Sandpoint's Lee breaks school record at Bonners Ferry invite

| March 27, 2022 1:11 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Sandpoint junior Rusty Lee broke the school record in the 300 meter hurdles event with a time of 39.73 seconds at the Bonners Ferry Invitational on Saturday.

“It was something he had his eyes set on last year,” Sandpoint coach Matt Brass said. “He was smart; he didn’t want to over-pressure himself; he knew it was within his grasp.”

Sandpoint won the girls meet with 365 points, with Bonners Ferry second with 266.

Timberlake and Sandpoint tied for the boys team title with 284 points.

Luke McCorkle of Sandpoint placed first in the 200 and the long jump.

Will Hurst also continued to dominate in his return back to the throwing cage with two more first place finishes in discus and shotput.

“He’s pretty analytical about what he does,” Brass said. “He knows where he wants to be, which makes him extremely easy to coach.”

Slate Fragoso set a personal record in the pole vault, clearing 12 fee, 9 inches.

For the girls, Megan Oulman of Sandpoint won the 1,600 and 3,200 and Ara Clark finished behind her in second place in the 3,200

Lilly Richardson, a sophomore, finished first in the 300 hurdles.

Priest River’s relay teams shined at Bonners Ferry, placing top four in the 4x100, the 4x200 and the 4x400.

Its two best finishes were in the 4x200 and 4x100 where the Spartans finished in second place.

“We have a good group of sophomores and juniors that work hard,” Priest River coach Jared Hughes said. “They push each other in practice and they set goals to get to state.”

Matyus McClain also excelled at the meet with high placements in the 100, shot put, and discus.

He finished third in the 100, second in shot put, and second in discus. He was also a part of the Spartans’ 4x100 meter relay team that placed second.

“He did really well,” Hughes said. “He’s coming into his own and becoming faster and stronger.”

This meet served as Clark Fork’s season opener.

The Wampus Cats had a total of 15 athletes on its roster, including five girls.

Clark Fork had just eight total athletes on its roster a year ago.

One of its best performances came from a new member of the team, junior Savannah Weymouth, in the pole vault event.

Weymouth finished seventh in the event, clearing 6 feet. She’s a transfer student from Montana and is the only pole vaulter on the Clark Fork track team.

“(Savannah) Weymouth and her sister were new to the school and they said they wanted to do pole vault,” Clark Fork coach Matt Majors said. “We’ve never done pole vault before and we were like heck, yeah, that’d be awesome. She brought some experience and we’re super excited to see what they do.”

Returning state qualifier Sam Barnett placed ninth in the 1600 with a time of 5:03.34.

Joe Bopp placed ninth in the long jump by jumping 17 feet, 7 inches.

“(Joe) Bopp killed it,” Majors said. “We haven’t really practiced the long jump this year so we were really pumped for him to do so well. We’re expecting big things from him.”
