PREP BASEBALL: Schneider shines for Viks as team finishes 4-0 in south stint

| March 27, 2022 1:15 AM

MERIDIAN — Coeur d’Alene senior Ryan Schneider hit a two-run double with two out in the top of the seventh inning — one of his three hits in the game — to break a 5-5 tie, lifting the Vikings over the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies 7-5 on Saturday at Rocky Mountain High.

Schneider, who has signed with Division 1 Belmont in Nashville, struck out 13 and allowed one hit for Coeur d’Alene.

“He was electric today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “It was hands down the best single game performance by him all year. He was dominant with three good pitches and stayed within himself and played with a lot of energy and tempo. Rocky has some good hitters, and he made them look like high school hitters.”

Elliot Smart also had two RBIs against Rocky Mountain.

Later, Cooper Erickson and Smart had two RBIs each as the Vikings beat the Madison Bobcats 10-7 to conclude the weekend 4-0.

“We had a lot of guys with some big hits throughout the day,” Karns said. “Our defense was much improved. We worked on some things in practice and the guys carried it over the last four days, which was nice to see.”

Coeur d’Alene (5-3) resumes Inland Empire League play at Lakeland on April 9.

BOISE — Sean Tierney drove in three runs for the Hawks, who finished the Buck’s Bags Spring Classic 1-3 following a loss to the Trojans at Bishop Kelly High.

“We came out hot in this one and were really squaring up the ball,” said Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury, whose team led 6-0 after two innings. “Then we went flat. I think our pitchers got a little tired too. It’s really hard playing four games in three days, especially to start off our season.”

Lakeland hosts Moscow for a doubleheader at Gorton Field next Saturday at noon.
