| March 23, 2022 1:17 AM

PRIEST RIVER — St. Maries pitcher Wyatt Holmes struck out 11 over 5 ⅓ innings for the Lumberjacks, who held off the Priest River Spartans 5-4 in the opener of a nonleague doubleheader on Tuesday at Priest River High.

Holmes, Dylan Larson and Tyler Olson had two hits each in the opener for St. Maries, which was held without an extra base hit in the opener. Priest River cut the deficit to 5-4 in the seventh on a bases loaded walk before Trace Wicks recorded a strikeout to end the game.

St. Maries led the second game 13-9 in the bottom of the fourth inning before the game was called due to darkness.

St. Maries (1-0) is scheduled to play the Lake City JV on Thursday at Thorco Field in Coeur d’Alene.

SPOKANE — The visiting Timberwolves loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning, but were unable to push the tying run across, falling to the Highlanders in a nonleague game at Al K. Jackson Field.

“We just made some mental blunders,” said Lake City coach Paul Manzardo, whose team allowed six runs in the bottom of the sixth after leading 4-2. “The kids gave a good effort, but we just need to be better and execute in key situations. We need to find that big hit with runners in scoring position. It just didn’t go our way today.”

Braeden Newby had two RBIs and Zach Garza scored two runs for Lake City (0-3), which visits Post Falls on April 6.

DEER PARK, Wash. — The visiting Tigers finally were able to open their season, and came out on the short end of a pitchers’ duel with the Stags.

Trevor Watson of Deer Park struck out seven and pitched a one-hitter.

Wyatt Kitchin of Timberlake fanned six and scattered six hits.

“I thought it was a prime example of it being Game 1,” first-year Timberlake head coach Bryce Johnson said. “We looked a little rusty at the plate. We put the ball in play; we hit a lot of balls at ’em.”

Cole Krepcik of Deer Park singled and scored on an error in the third inning for the game’s only run.

“Wyatt was dominant,” Johnson said. “He’s pitched probably his best game since I’ve coached him — and that’s a pretty good hitting team.”

Andrew Horn singled in the first inning for Timberlake’s lone hit.

Timberlake plays host to Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., today at 4.
