PREP ROUNDUP: Lake City drops baseball, softball openers
• BASEBALL
SPOKANE — Lake City trailed 7-0 after two innings before battling back, and had the tying run at the plate in the seventh before falling to the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 8-6 in the Timberwolves’ season opener Thursday.
Calvin Carrol’s two-run single in the sixth pulled Lake City to within 8-5.
“We showed a lot of grit and fight and character, which is good — especially for a young team,” said Lake City coach Paul Manzardo, whose roster includes just four seniors.
Ethan Taylor was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Timberwolves, who struck out 13 times against four Bulldog pitchers.
“It was our first game outside, we were fighting some nerves, but the kids battled,” Manzardo said. “We had some quality at-bats (in the comeback); the kids didn’t try to do too much, put the ball in play, ran the bases, clutch hitting.”
Lake City plays host to Mt. Spokane on Saturday.
