KENNEWICK, Wash. — In preparation, and a little bit of necessity, the Coeur d’Alene boys golf team departed a day early to prepare for the season-opening Kennewick Invitational.

It sure paid off on Friday.

Parker Freeman shot an even-par 66 and finished second for the Vikings, who claimed the team title by five strokes at Zintel Creek Golf Club.

Coeur d’Alene left Thursday in order to get its required 10 practices in, walking the course and practicing on the range that night.

“For any sport, when you do not have to jump right off the bus and play, especially for golf, it’s good,” Coeur d’Alene boys golf coach Chase Bennett said. “We were able to play a few holes and get familiar with some things around the course. I think that was definitely helpful.”

Grant Potter tied for fourth with a 68, Cole Jaworski (69) was seventh and Trey Nipp (70) eighth for Coeur d’Alene. Mead was second with a 278.

“We really didn’t know what to expect coming into this season,” Bennett said. “Mead is looking really strong and shot even par at the Pasco Invitational (Thursday). But I was super impressed with our boys. Every one of these kids shot well, and you’ve got to have almost zero mistakes to shoot a round like they did.”

Coeur d’Alene competes in the Lewiston Invitational on Monday at the Lewiston Country Club.

Post Falls drops pair

to open season

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Senior Aiden Winters singled in the Trojans' lone run in the fifth inning of an 11-1 loss to the Kamiakin Braves to open the season.

“We just had to get the rust off and were really on the field for the first time,” said first-year Post Falls coach Kurt Reese, who takes over for Mick Zeller. “We’ve been outside here and there and obviously have a lot of work to do.”

Against Kennewick in the second game, the Trojans (0-2) allowed 13 runs in the third inning.

“Our defense kind of let us down,” said Reese, the former Lakeland High star. “We need to find a way to get that fixed. The guys are competing and trying to get back into it. We just need to keep building and work on the issues we saw today.”

Winters singled and scored two runs against Kennewick. CD Sharples and Jake Bustamante had a single and RBI each for Post Falls.

Post Falls plays a doubleheader at Chiawana today in Pasco, starting at noon.
