LAKE CDA: Lament in the making

| March 9, 2022 1:00 AM

Is Lake Coeur d’Alene only enjoyable if you own a boat?

Recently there has been a trend to build bigger and more beautiful than before, but if we replace all that is natural about Coeur d’Alene will it be better?

The addition of the large boat storage facility on U.S. 95 now blocks the view of the lake and Canfield Mountain as you enter town but worse yet is the large TV sign flashes a reminder there is a lake that can be seen only on a boat!

Slowly land around the lake is growing million dollar “homes” like a fungus over the rock ledges, timbered forests and open fields. Now we are going to build high rises downtown to further block the views of the lake.

All of us moved here at some time because of the quaint town and beautiful lake in the natural setting of Idaho. I think we can all agree we don’t want Coeur d’Alene to become the big city of North Idaho. If that is what you want, move on to Boise, visit Spokane, or travel to Seattle and Portland. They are wonderful for what they are but they are not the Schitsu’umsh or “Those who were found here.”

The real people who have lived and work here do not spend their day on a boat but have always enjoyed the natural lake views.
