LEGION BASEBALL: Lums open Seattle-area tourney with shutout

KENT, Wash. — Troy Shepard struck out nine and allowed two hits over six shutout innings, and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” team opened play at the Josh Dickerson Memorial Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Diamond Sports Elite Black 18U on Friday at Hogan Park.

Shepard, a left-hander, walked two for Coeur d’Alene (13-6).

Spencer Zeller tripled in the first and scored on a groundout for the Lums, one of three runs he scored in the game. Joe DuCoeur hit a pair of sacrifice flies, Cooper Larson singled in a run in the third, and Ryan Schneider added an RBI single in the fifth.

The Lums play Narrows SPL 18U today at 11:30 a.m., and the Northwest Reign at 4:30 p.m., both at Brannan Park in Auburn, Wash.

Northern Lakes drops first two at Big Bucks tourney

LIBBY, Mont. — The class A Mountaineers lost 5-1 to the Bitterroot Bucks and 14-5 to the Mission Valley Mariners in their openers at the Big Bucks Tournament.

Against Bitterroot, Northern Lakes (6-4) managed just one hit — a two-out single in the third inning by Kenny Wells. But the Mountaineers drew seven walks and one hit batsmen, and the Bucs committed three errors.

Against Mission Valley, Jacob Schaffner had two hits and drove in two runs for Northern Lakes, and Caden Robinett and Wyatt Kitchin each had two hits.

For Mission Valley, Dawson DuMont hit two home runs and a double, and finished 3 for 5 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Cole Wadsworth was 4 for 4 with an RBI and two runs.

Northern Lakes plays Libby today at 2:45 p.m. PDT as the tournament continues.
