LEGION BASEBALL: Northern Lakes ends long layoff with sweep

| June 18, 2022 1:00 AM

BONNERS FERRY — Four Northern Lakes pitchers combined on a no-hitter in the opener, and the Mountaineers class A team, playing for the first time in 20 days, went on to sweep Bonners Ferry 17-4 and 18-0 in nonleague play Friday.

“It was fun to finally play some baseball,” said Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson, whose team had a handful of doubleheaders rained out earlier this month. “I was really happy; we got to see a lot of arms, and plenty of at-bats. I was expecting a little bit of rust, but I didn’t see that.”

In the first game, Caden Robinett struck out five in two innings, and also went 2 for 3 with three RBIs for Northern Lakes (3-1). Payden Wysong drove in four runs, three on a double in an eight-run first inning.

Bonners scored all four of its runs in the third inning on four walks, two hit batsmen and an error.

In the second game, Wyatt Kitchin, Jacob Hessing, Scott Pote and Andrew Horn teamed on a two-hitter for the Mountaineers, combining for nine strikeouts in five innings.

Robinett went 3 for 4 and scored three runs, Kenny Wells was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs, and Wysong drove in two runs.

Northern Lakes’ scheduled twinbill today at St. Maries was canceled because St. Maries’ Legion field was flooded.

The Mountaineers are scheduled to return to action Monday at home vs. Orofino to open North Idaho League play.
