PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Shutdown second pushes Lakeland past Sandpoint

| January 22, 2022 1:10 AM

RATHDRUM — It was when the Hawks found themselves scattered that they eventually took the upper hand for good.

Lila Kiefer scored six points, all from the free-throw line in the second quarter for Lakeland, which held visiting Sandpoint scoreless in the second quarter on the way to a 40-34 Inland Empire League win at Hawk Court in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game.

“Defensively, we just did a good job of scrambling,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “(Lakeland senior) Addie (Kiefer) picked up a couple of fouls early in the second quarter, and Lila knocked down some shots to keep us either tied or slightly ahead, which allowed us to keep Addie on the bench. We made some good rotations defensively and were able to get out and run the floor a little bit. It was a good quarter for us.”

Kenna Simon had nine points and 10 rebounds, Addie Kiefer 11 points and Lia Kiefer four assists for Lakeland (7-6, 2-4 IEL), which is scheduled to play at Moscow on Thursday.

“It was a good win for us,” Seymour said. “Sandpoint’s a good team and plays physical. Kenna had a really good game. Those 10 boards were huge.”

Kelsey Cessna and Daylee Driggs scored 12 points each for Sandpoint (8-7, 1-4), which hosts Lakeland on Jan. 29.
