PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Second-quarter spurt propels Lake City past Post Falls

| January 19, 2022 1:25 AM

POST FALLS — Trailing by four in the second quarter, Lake City hit three quick 3-pointers, then got a steal and score, and the Timberwolves went on to beat the Post Falls Trojans 59-48 in Inland Empire League play Tuesday night at The Arena.

Kendall Pickford hit four 3s and finished with 14 points for Lake City (16-2, 6-1 IEL), ranked No. 2 in the state 5A media poll. Avery Waddington added 13 points and Sophia Zufelt hit two 3s and had 12 points for the T-Wolves, who hit eight 3s in the game.

“Obviously that’s something we wanted to take away, and we didn’t do a very good job of that,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “They were the aggressors, and we were kind of on our heels a little bit. For some reason, we weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be.”

Capri Sims had 14 points and 10 rebounds for fifth-ranked Post Falls (14-4, 4-2), which plays host to Lewiston on Friday.

Lake City plays at Coeur d’Alene on Friday in the Fight for the Fish spirit game.

“Lewiston played a great game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “We had some girls step up for us tonight. The first 12, 13 minutes I was pretty happy with how we were playing. Then we started turning the ball over.”
