Frederick Douglas “Doug” Markley, 68

| January 16, 2022 1:00 AM

Frederick Douglas “Doug” Markley, 68 of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Jan. 7, 2022. Doug was born and raised in Pullman, Wash., and Moscow, Idaho, but he was deep-down a local boy wherever he found himself.

Doug’s unabashed candor and magnetic personality were revered by everyone that knew him and unforgettable to anyone that met him. Complete strangers would recognize him by his good-natured stream of bad-natured jokes. The absence of his unmistakable gravelly voice will no doubt leave us a deafening silence, but his resounding memory will croon forever.

Doug was a tremendous presence at Lakeland High School where he wrestled and played varsity football, and by all accounts was fairly handy with the ladies. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy from April 26, 1974, to March 25, 1977, in Hawaii, Japan, Thailand and the Philippine Islands. Upon discharge he became an exceptionally hard-working and gifted electrician for Aztec Electric in Spokane for over 40 years, a superintendent of bridges, corporate buildings and city infrastructure, or as he put it, a “big shot” on the job.

He lived most of his life in Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls remodeling his home and building a shop to profess his hobby of building and restoring hot rods and Harley Davidsons. He could work mechanical miracles with bailing wire and duct tape and he viewed the advent of Flex-Tape as an absolute game-changer in the field of home and auto repairs.

He selflessly made these repairs regularly for his children and grandchildren in a moments notice. He was fond of the outdoors and loved hunting, camping and trap shooting, winning several top trophies for shooting competitions around the Inland Northwest as a long-standing member of the Hauser Lake, Coeur d’Alene and Spokane Gun Clubs. Other memberships include the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Bath Salt & Shampoo of the month club.

Doug is survived by two sons, Charlie (Stacey) Markley of New York and Ryan (Clarissa) Markley of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Terriann Markley; five grandchildren, Kaili, Blaise, Olivia, Lilah and Carter Markley. He is also survived by his cousins, Arnie (Terri) Rathbun of Coeur d’Alene and Vince Rathbun of Moscow, Idaho; an uncle, Loris Rathbun of Moscow, Idaho; nephew Steve Markley and nieces Jamie Markley Hintz and Jennifer Riley; six grandnieces and nephews and one brand spanking new great-niece born January 14.

Doug was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Markley, his parents, Fred and Betty Markley, grandparents, Sherman and Isabelle Markley and Arnold and Cleo Anderson.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 1 p.m. at Bell Tower Funeral Home 3398 E. Jenalan Ave., Post Falls, Idaho, 83854 with funeral director Lance Cox officiating.
