PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene pins down Sandpoint

| January 13, 2022 1:15 AM

SANDPOINT — It was kind of like a wave on Wednesday night at Sandpoint High.

First, Coeur d’Alene captured the momentum on the way to a big lead. Then Sandpoint made it interesting toward the end, but the Vikings picked up pins from Beau Speelman at 220 pounds and Jaxson Washington at 285, beating the Bulldogs 53-33.

“We started out really strong with some experienced guys getting wins,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat, whose team led 23-0 early on. Sandpoint bounced back to make it 41-33 heading into the final two bouts before Speelman and Washington clinched the dual.

“Everyone had an opportunity to win, and we’ve got to figure out how to win those matches. Our older guys did some good things, but we let a couple slip away.”

Bode Alexander (106), Logan Bradley (113), Will Rossi (120), Dax Larsen (138), Porter Craig (145) and Demarco Piazza (152) also had pins for Coeur d’Alene, which competes in the Rocky Mountain Rumble on Friday and Saturday at Sentinel High in Missoula.

Christian Kelly won by technical fall at 98 for Coeur d’Alene.

“Christian, Demarco and Dax are just solid kids and know how to wrestle correctly,” Moffat said. “They always give you a good effort each night.”

Sandpoint competes at the River City Duals on Friday and Saturday at Post Falls High.
