David L. Schreiber, 80 years of age, passed away Dec. 24, 2021, in his Coeur d’Alene home.

Born Nov. 15, 1941, in Klamath Falls, Ore., Dave grew up on his family’s farm and was a four-sport athlete in high school. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, and later earned Masters’ and PhD degrees in Hydraulic Engineering from Washington State University.

Dave married his wife, Susan, on New Year’s Eve 1963 and, after completing his graduate school studies, moved to Chevy Chase, Md., where he worked in a series of engineering roles for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In 1978, Dave and Susan returned to Susan’s hometown of Coeur d’Alene with their three young children in tow. His engineering career continued with consulting work through Schreiber Consulting, and, later, Grant, Schreiber & Associates, which took him to assignments in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Vienna. Dave was also an active real estate developer in the area, with notable projects including Coeur d’Alene Commerce Park and the Ice Plant Townhomes.

Dave was a devoted husband and father, always giving to his wife and kids. He had the most special surprises for Susan’s birthdays or anniversaries, and he loved treating her like a queen. But his gifts didn’t just come wrapped in packages, with Dave it was also a gift of time. You could find him helping his kids with homework, coaching baseball, officiating swim meets, driving to out-of-town tournaments, chaperoning high school dances, traveling for the birth of his grand babies and then spending time watching the grand kids play the sports they loved.

Dave also truly valued the Coeur d’Alene community where he spent the last 42 years of his life and gave back to it in a variety of ways. He spent 38 years actively involved in the Rotary Club of Coeur d’Alene. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and served the roles of president, secretary, and attendance chairman. Dave was an active supporter of Coeur d’Alene High School athletics, a past president of the Viking Booster Club, and gave selflessly to the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen American Legion Baseball program.

Dave is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Susan, son John of Cardiff, Calif., son Dan of Coeur d’Alene, daughter Emily and her husband Lindsey of Seattle, sister Katie of The Dalles, Ore., three nieces and nephews, and seven grandchildren — Kes, Michael, Morgan, Matthew, Sophia, Lilly and Crosby. Dave built his life around the mantra that “if a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” He was loved and revered by many and will be dearly missed by all.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held later this summer.
