STATE HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS: Coeur d'Alene second, Post Falls third after first day

| February 26, 2022 1:25 AM

POCATELLO — It was a start not even Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat could believe.

But Coeur d’Alene set itself up nicely for a strong run at the program’s first title since 2011 after Day 1 at the state 5A wrestling tournament at Holt Arena on Friday.

Coeur d’Alene advanced 10 of its 16 qualifiers to the semifinals and has five still remaining in the consolation bracket, finishing the first day in second place with 143 points, 11 back of defending champion Meridian. Post Falls is in third with 135 points.

“We’re hitting on all cylinders right now,” Moffat said. “The only guy we lost had the guy glued to the mat and didn’t get the call he needed, so we should have everyone still alive. But there’s lots of points out there tomorrow.”

Christian Kelly (98 pounds), Bode Alexander (98), Will Rossi (120), Dax Larsen (132), Porter Craig (145), Demarco Piazza (152), Sebastian Prangley (160), Gunner Giulio (170), Rylan Rogers (195) and Jaxson Washington (285) advanced to the semifinals for Coeur d’Alene today starting at 7:30 a.m. PST.

“There’s a saying that you can’t win it on the first day, but you can lose it for sure,” Moffat said. “Our guys were prepared for it and came out and were aggressive and fought. So far, we’ve done everything we needed to do.”

Meridian, with 10 semifinals out of its 24 qualifiers, has eight wrestlers in the consolation bracket.

“Our goal is to get at least five into the finals,” Moffat said. “If we do that, we set ourselves up for something good. But we’ve got to wake up ready to go.”

Coeur d’Alene sophomore Alyssa Randles won her only match of the day to advance to the semifinals in the girls tournament at 126 pounds. This is the first year the state has sponsored a separate girls tournament, which is going on alongside the boys tournament.

“Alyssa came out and did her thing,” Moffat said. “She really just took care of business.”

Rider Seguine (98), Ethan Wilson (106), Trey Smith (126), Seth Martin (138), John Rudebaugh (152), Jose Laguna (170), Gentry Smith (182), Malcolm Duthie (195) and Trevor Miller (220) advanced to the semifinals for Post Falls, which qualified 19, and has seven remaining in the consolation bracket.

“We had a good first day,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “Ethan was huge for us today. We knew what he was capable of, but he’s been busting out the last two weeks. He’s really been coming on the last two weeks. Malcolm has really been coming on at the end of the year. He hasn’t wrestled since he was younger, but is coming on as well.”

Abigale Piper (138) and Megan Webster (285) advanced to the girls semifinals for the Trojans.

Zach Macdonald, who finished runner-up last year at 98 pounds, advanced to the semis at 106 for Lake City, which is 14th.

4A: Lucas Williams (138 pounds) and Preston Jeffs (285) advanced to the semifinals for Lakeland, which is in 13th with 38 points.

Minico of Rupert leads the tournament with 136.5 points.

3A: Stryker Huston (120 pounds) and James Billingsley (195) advanced to the semifinals for Timberlake, which is 14th after the first day.

South Fremont leads with 133 points.

2A: Kyle Sibert of St. Maries advanced to the 220-pound semifinals. The Lumberjacks are in 19th place.

Ririe leads with 105 points.
