PREP REGIONAL WRESTLING: Post Falls wins eighth straight title; Sandpoint ends Lakeland's 13-year run as champs

COEUR d'ALENE — Post Falls had five champions and won its eighth straight 5A Region 1 wrestling championship on Saturday at Lake City High.

Rider Sequine (98 pounds), Zack Campbell (113), Trey Smith (126), Gentry Smith (182) and Trevor Miller (195) won regional titles for Post Falls, which qualified 13 wrestlers to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at Holt Arena in Pocatello.

“We’re so proud of our kids today,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We had a lot of kids get big wins today. More than anything, it was a great team win. It was just a great effort by our kids to win by that much."

The top two finishers in each weight from Region 1 automatically qualify for state. Also, two at-large berths per weight are available statewide.

Post Falls totaled 444 points. Coeur d'Alene was second with 342.

Coeur d'Alene produced six champions and qualified 11 to state — and are hoping for at least another four at-large berths today.

Viking regional champions were Dylan Moffat (138), Porter Craig (145), Demarco Piazza (152), Sebastian Prangley (160), Gunner Giulio (170) and Rylan Rogers (195).

"I was proud of the way the whole team wrestled," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. "Old guys, young guys, all wrestled hard. Louis McEvoy was third at 182; he'd only won eight or nine matches all year, but he gave himself a chance at a wild card."

Lake City qualified two to state, including regional champion Zach Macdonald (106), and could get as many as four wild cards to state.

"We had some young kids wrestle really well," Lake City coach Corey Owen said. "We lost to Lewiston in a dual and beat them in the tournament. I think our district is so tough, some of our fourths might get wild cards."

Sandpoint claims regional title,

snaps 13-year run by Lakeland

RATHDRUM — Andrew Duke (98 pounds), Forest Ambridge (126), Darrian Resso (152), Jordan Tyler (160) and Blake Sherrill (182) won individual titles for Sandpoint, which claimed the 4A Region 1 championship at Lakeland High.

Sandpoint finished with 427 points, followed by Lakeland with 347 and Moscow with 285. The Hawks had won the previous 13 regional championships.

Sandpoint last won a regional title in 2008, when the Bulldogs went back-to-back and won for the third time in four years.

The regional champion in each weight advances to state next Friday and Saturday at Holt Arena in Pocatello. Wild cards are available for the top six seeds statewide to state.

St. Maries takes second

At District 1-2 meet

KOOSKIA — Landon Tweedy (120 pounds), Kyle Sibert (220) and Landon Warren (285) claimed individual championships for St. Maries in the 2A District 1-2 tournament at Clearwater Valley High.

St. Maries finished runner-up with 193 points. Clearwater Valley won the tournament with 218.5 points, snapping a streak of five straight titles for the Lumberjacks.

“This is a young team that has been plagued with injuries and illness all season,” St. Maries coach Dennis Humphrey said. “We lost three big pieces to season-ending injures and to finish like they did, I couldn’t be prouder.”

The top four in each weight class advance to state next Friday and Saturday at Holt Arena in Pocatello.
