5A REGION 1 BOYS BASKETBALL: Coeur d'Alene upended by Lewiston, which will face Lake City in title game
Top-seeded Lake City triumphed as expected, beating No. 4 Post Falls 77-47 in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament Friday night.
But No. 2 seed Coeur d’Alene stumbled late, falling 51-47 to No. 3 Lewiston at home.
Lake City (21-1) will play host to Lewiston (17-5) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the regional championship game. The Bengals are the only team to beat the Timberwolves this season, winning 62-57 at Lewiston on Feb. 3.
“I know our kids will be ready,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said.
Coeur d’Alene (14-5) will play host to Post Falls (4-18) in a loser-out game Tuesday at 6:30.
“It’s a tougher road (to state), but we’re ready for it,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said.
Lewiston 51, Coeur d’Alene 47: Chanse Eke’s three-point play with 1:05 remaining put the Bengals up 48-46. The Vikings committed a couple of turnovers in the final minute, and Lewiston hit 3 of 4 free throws to seal it.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t have better balanced scoring, didn’t move the ball well, and didn’t close out the game,” Adams said.
Point guard Steven Burgess had 11 of his 21 points in the first quarter for the Vikings, whose main inside presence, Cameren Cope, played sparingly due to illness and finished with six points.
Braydon Forsman scored 13 points, James White 11 for Lewiston, which lost 57-46 and 68-62 to Cd’A during Inland Empire League play.
