LETTERS: Fact-check opinions
I applaud your putting a spotlight on the new Project Neighborly to foster dialogue between opposing political parties to hopefully find common ground. Yet it is disingenuous to promote such a project when your letters to the editor pages are filled with hate letters and untruths.
I understand the purpose of the letters to the editor is for people to have a vehicle to express their opinion. Yet as of late, it has become a vehicle for people to spread political lies, e.g. J.W. Vance’s assertion that “Pelosi stop(ped) … Trump’s call for the National Guard a day or so ahead” of the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Printing such audacious, unproven assertions gives them credence.
If you are going to continue publishing unchecked political assertions in your letters to the editor, I think you would be doing your readers a service to fact check such assertions to the best of your ability.
People rely on The Press for factual information, not unproven political rants.
