PREP BASKETBALL: Lakeland advances to regional title round

| February 8, 2022 1:05 AM

GIRLS

MOSCOW — In a game where Lakeland didn’t score a point in the first quarter, and didn’t make a basket in the first half, the Hawks found a way to keep their season alive Monday night.

Addie Kiefer scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half as third-seeded Lakeland defeated the second-seeded Moscow Bears 39-36 in the loser-out first-round of the 4A Region 1 girls basketball tournament in Bear Den.

Lakeland (8-9) travels to top-seeded Sandpoint (10-8) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the regional title. Moscow finished 6-16.

Lakeland trailed 12-9 at halftime, hitting 9 of 14 free throws to account for its scoring.

“That first quarter we were tight as a tick,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “We rushed shots. Moscow forced us not just into bad shots, but bad rushed shots.”

As the Hawks left the court at intermission, “The P.A. announcer was kind enough to let everybody in the gym know that Lakeland had yet to score a field goal,” Seymour said.

He said that got him a bit fired up, though he said he didn’t know what impact it had on his players.

In any event, Lakeland scored its first field goal of the game moments into the third quarter.

Moscow led 25-24 early in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks took control with a 10-0 run, and held off a late Bears flurry at the end.

Payton Sterling had six points and three steals for Lakeland. Kenna Simon and Ziya Munyer had eight rebounds each, Landree Simon three assists.

“We were relaxing a little bit, not just chucking the first available shot toward the basket,” Seymour said of the second half. “Getting some movement toward the basket.

“They stuck with it and they listened and they worked,” Seymour added. “They were much better on the boards, Moscow kinda worked us on the boards last time (in a 45-25 Bears victory).”

Addie Kiefer also had six rebounds, two steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

“Addie took over in the second half,” Seymour said.

Lakeland and Sandpoint split during Inland Empire League play this year, the Hawks winning 40-34 at home and the Bulldogs winning 48-37 at Sandpoint.

Sandpoint beat Lakeland in the best-of-3 series last year to advance to state — each team winning on the other team’s home court.

“Nice to have a little momentum going our way again … pretty excited,” Seymour said. “Girls were really excited after the game, and they should be. That was a good, not always pretty, win on the road to advance to the next round.”

KELLOGG — KJ Walker, one of four seniors honored on senior night, scored 13 points as the Wildcats beat the Miners at Andrews Gymnasium.

Walker was dealing with an injury from football season at the start of the basketball season for Kellogg (11-7).

“It took him a bit to get comfortable,” Kellogg coach Mike Martin said. “We were expecting this from him before the season, so it's good to see that it’s started to come to fruition. He’s being a little more aggressive with the ball in his hands; it’s great to see him turn the corner.”

Junior Kolby Luna added 13 points for Kellogg.

Junior Luke Miller had nine points, and “he just brings such a spark defensively,” Martin said.

Sophomore Brad Tesky led all scorers with 18 points for Wallace (3-9), which plays at Lakeside on Friday in Scenic Idaho Conference play.

Kellogg plays at Timberlake on Friday, looking to wrap up the Intermountain League title.

“We ratcheted up the defense in the second half a lot better; I know that sounds crazy when you give up 14 3-pointers,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said. “I was proud of Floyd and Luke; they are our leaders and they stepped up when they needed to. And we got good games out of Alex and Austin as well.”

Riley Sullivan hit eight 3s and led all scorers with 30 points for the Post Falls “C” team. Caleb Heath hit five 3s and added 17 points for the Trojans.
