Signing day roundup: Vikings continue pipeline to Carroll College
From news services
Carroll College is becoming Coeur d’Alene High East.
Three Viking standouts — linebacker Gunner Giulio, defensive lineman Jaxson Washington and offensive lineman Wyatt Sandford — are part of the initial 34-man signing class for the NAIA school in Helena, Mont.
Giulio (6-0, 195 pounds) starred at running back and linebacker at Coeur d’Alene, was a two-time second team all-Idaho selection on defense, and the 5A Inland Empire League MVP.
"I chose Carroll College because of how much the professors and coaches care about the students and the athletes. It felt like family, and I love the atmosphere on campus and in Nelson Stadium," Giulio said in a Carroll news release.
Washington (6-1, 260) was a two-time all-5A IEL selection and was first-team all-Idaho in 2021.
"I chose Carroll College because it felt like the perfect fit for me,” Washington said. “The coaches, players, and community were very friendly and I can't wait to play with my former teammates that are already there."
Sandford (6-4, 265) was a first-team all-5A IEL selection, and second team all-Idaho.
"I chose Carroll College because of the great education program and the great culture that the coaches have built,” Sandford said. “I have former teammates at Carroll and can't wait to play with them again."
They join a pair of former Coeur d’Alene High standouts — quarterback Jack Prka and wide receiver Jake Brown, both freshmen — at Carroll.
Another Coeur d’Alene High standout, edge rusher Cameren Cope (6-5, 210), signed with Weber State during the December early signing period.
Idaho: Vandal football coach Jason Eck announced his initial recruiting class of 2022, adding 21 on signing day.
“We wanted the northwest to be our starting point,” Eck said. “You will see Idaho Washington and Oregon well represented in this class.”
The Vandal group includes 15 incoming freshman and six college transfers.
Ridge Docekal (6-foot-3, 210 pounds) was the lone quarterback in the class. Docekal, from Saguaro High in Scottsdale, Ariz., was high school teammates with Hayden and Hogan Hatten.
“In football you win at the line of scrimmage and great quarterback play so that’s where we started,” Eck said. “We are deep at the quarterback position right now and defensive line was our biggest concern rebuilding their depth.”
The Vandals will host their spring game April 30 in Boise, at Eagle High School's Thunder Stadium
Washington State: Cougar football coach Jake Dickert announced nine new signees to go with 14 that committed during the early signing period in December.
Among the newest Cougars are John Mateer, a 6-1, 215, quarterback from Little Elm, Texas. Washington State also added four offensive linemen and three defensive backs.
Eastern Washington: After welcoming 10 newcomers during the early signing period in December, the Eastern Washington University football team announces the addition of six to the 2022 signing class on the first day of the February signing period. All six are high school players, with one signing a National Letter of Intent and the rest receiving preferred walk-on spots.
February's signees are comprised of five players from Washington and one from California.
"We filled some of the holes that we knew that we were going to embark upon after the first go-round of signees on Dec. 15th," Eastern Washington coach Aaron Best said. "We really earmarked some guys in certain positions, whether they were preferred walk-ons and/or some players that we really felt met a need at certain positions."
The new February signees include: Nick Adimora (Long Beach, Calif. / Mayfair HS), Talon Betts (Rochester, Wash. / Rochester HS), Bret Fullington (Issaquah, Wash. / Liberty HS), Wesley Garrett (Mukilteo, Wash. / Kamiak HS), Myles Mayovsky (Kennewick, Wash. / Kennewick HS) and Tony Ortega (East Wenatchee, Wash. / Eastmont HS).
Other known local signings:
Lucy Evans, Lake City High, College of Idaho women’s soccer
Alahna Lien, Post Falls High, Montana State-Billings triathlon
