PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Orchard's big night powers Vikings past Lewiston

| February 2, 2022 1:30 AM

LEWISTON — Coeur d’Alene High coach Jon Adams knew that it was only a matter of time before Logan Orchard was going to have a breakout game.

Tuesday night was the sophomore’s night.

Orchard scored 24 points, hitting 5 of 7 from the 3-point line, as the Vikings held off the Lewiston Bengals 68-62 in an Inland Empire League game at Lewiston High.

“Logan’s a special and phenomenal player,” Adams said. “He always shoots this way in practice. He works the hardest on the team and he’s usually the guy that gets us going. When he’s on, he elevates everything. He’s been a little off lately, but we knew it was a matter of time and he was feeling it tonight.”

Steven Burgess scored 12 points and Cameren Cope 10 points for Coeur d’Alene (11-4, 5-2 IEL), which travels to Sandpoint on Saturday.

Coeur d’Alene made 10 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Jace McKarcher scored 17 points for Lewiston (12-5, 2-3), which shot 10 of 28 from the 3-point line.

“Lewiston is a really good team,” Adams said. “(Coach) Jayson Ulrich always has a great team, and they shot the lights out tonight. We just kind of weathered the storm and made some free throws at the end.”

Post Falls 43

COEUR d’ALENE — The visiting Trojans played at a cautious pace, and it worked for a half.

Then the Timberwolves, ranked No. 1 in 5A, picked up the defense in the third quarter, and turned a nine-point lead late in the second quarter into a 31-point advantage after three quarters of the IEL game.

Post Falls pulled within 30-21 late in the second quarter. Lake City got a three-point play just before halftime, then outscored the Trojans 26-7 in the third quarter.

“They (Post Falls) did a good job in the second quarter of long possessions … they had to be at least 45-second possessions,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “At halftime, we said we can’t allow that. We picked up the tempo, but we also started trapping, and picked up the aggression on defense, and that really turned the game fast.”

Junior Kolton Mitchell, who went over the 1,000-point scoring mark for his career, scored 25 points for Lake City (17-0, 5-0 IEL). He now has 1,028 points. Blake Buchanan added 18 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots for the Timberwolves. Zach Johnson scored 10 points.

“I thought we played offense and defense with great energy,” Winger said.

Neil McCarthy and Tyras Blake each scored eight points for Post Falls (3-14, 0-6).

“We have to have some ball control against these guys,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They’ve assembled a team that you don’t want to give any extra possessions to. When Kolton’s got it going, making those shots off the dribble, off screens, that’s tough. Then you’ve got inside with Zach (Johnson) and (Blake) Buchanan, they’re formidable. … the second half they threw a little wrinkle at us defensively, and put us on our heels. But our guys, athlete vs. athlete, we competed hard; we didn’t quit. We battled. Lake City’s good.”

Lake City travels to Lewiston on Thursday.

Post Falls is home vs. Lakeland on Saturday.

“Tristan did a good job of attacking the rim tonight,” said St. Maries assistant coach A.J. Becktel, who coached the team in the absence of head coach Bryan Chase for the second straight game. “We’ve really been trying to get him to slow down offensively and make the right decisions.”

Trentyn Kreager scored 17 points — all in the first half — for Priest River (8-7), which trailed 44-37 at halftime.

“When we walked into the locker room, we emphasized that 37 points that we’d allowed in the first half all year,” Becktel said. “We just talked and made sure to get out on their shooters and didn’t allow a lot of easy shots in the second half.”
