NIC ROUNDUP: Cardinals advance to Golden Gate championship

SAN FRANCISCO — Defensively, North Idaho did exactly what it needed to do to offset a tough night shooting against Delta College of Stockton, Calif., in the Golden Gate Classic on Friday night.

NIC limited Delta to 25 points in the first half, then outscored the Mustangs 52-33 in the second half in an 85-58 win at San Francisco City College.

“We played really well on the defensive end tonight,” NIC coach Corey Symons said. “We didn’t score the ball very well and they sat in a zone and gave us a tough time offensively.”

Sophomore Julius Mims had 28 points and 20 rebounds for NIC, which advances to face host San Francisco City in the championship game tonight.

Great Falls tourney

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — The Cardinals closed out the Battle for the Rockies duals tournament 1-2, beating Snow College of Ephraim, Utah, in the final dual of the day at the University of Providence.

Earlier in the day, NIC fell to NAIA programs Dickinson State (41-12) and Providence (41-6).

Kanaipono Tapia (149 pounds) and Kobi Johnson (125) each went unbeaten on the day for NIC, which competes in the Battle for the Rockies tournament starting today at 9 a.m. PST.
