SCHOOL LEVY: Don’t believe everything you hear

There are many misconceptions being used as reasons for not supporting the Coeur d’Alene School District’s Aug. 30 Security and Maintenance Levy. It’s time to set the record straight. If any of the following statements is something you believe, please research the TRUTH for yourself, then vote yes on Aug. 30:

Misconception: The levy will tax me out of my home.

Truth: The overall tax rate for Coeur d’Alene Schools has decreased 34% since 2016. The rate is projected to decrease further in 2023, even with the passage of this levy.

Misconception: The school district is not fiscally responsible, and that’s why they need this levy.

Truth: Our school district receives NO funding for maintenance other than lottery money. The $1 million received this fiscal year from lottery funds is a far cry from the $6.9 million needed, and most of the $1 million pays for everyday maintenance costs and labor.

Misconception: The school district received COVID funds that should have been used for deferred maintenance.

Truth: The COVID funds directed to the school district were provided AFTER significant reductions in funding from the state and only served to balance the budget.

Misconception: I’m on a fixed income and have no responsibility to support students, now.

Truth: Even on a fixed income, you have a responsibility to support the next generation. Quality schools make this community appealing for everyone. Strong schools lower crime rates, decrease dependence on government systems, provide an educated workforce, and increase the local economy.
