It's ice cream time at Twin Lakes Schoolhouse

Twin Lakes community members have as much love for each other as they do for their old schoolhouse.

"This is not a community where people move in and move out," Laura White, secretary for the Twin Lakes Community Schoolhouse Foundation, said Thursday.

"People move out to Twin Lakes and they stay. Their children come and their grandchildren," she said. "To have this schoolhouse be a gathering place where you can have movies, dances and family fun is so important.

"We just want a place that serves our community that shows the love we have for each other," she added.

The Twin Lakes Community Schoolhouse Foundation is hosting its seventh annual ice cream social from 2-4 p.m. Saturday at the 102-year-old, one-room schoolhouse at 10017 W. Twin Lakes Road.

The day will feature live music by Northwest Regional Fiddle Contest competitor Emilie Miller, hamburgers and hot dogs, raffle baskets, hand-crafted items, games and activities for kids, the debut of the 2023 Twin Lakes calendar and, of course, ice cream.

The Twin Lakes Community Schoolhouse, originally the Upper Twin Lakes School, was built in 1920 and was used as a school through 1947, just before the Lakeland Joint School District was incorporated.

"Then it was kind of forgotten and just started deteriorating until the building wasn’t useful," White said.

The foundation to save the schoolhouse formed in 2016.

"Everybody just got behind us," White said. "The support we have from the Twin Lakes and the Rathdrum communities is just amazing. The neighbors donate their times, local businesses donate."

She said the locals care about preserving the schoolhouse for their children and community to enjoy.

"It's not too often that you see history like this schoolhouse," White said. "It’s kind of a little hidden gem out here."
