SCHOOL LEVY: Using the usual marketing ploys

Well, here we go again, the bi-annual Coeur d’Alene School District levy. The first Press article stated that the levy would be for “deferred maintenance and repairs.” The district soon realized that “deferred maintenance and repairs” was not emotional enough, so the second article added “security.” Now this will hit the old emotional button. This time they are going all out. They have the usual letters to the editor saying how much this levy is needed to continue the high standards of the district to educate the students. They even have TV ads showing how unsafe it is for students.

The first thing that comes to mind is who has allowed these unsafe conditions to exist. Also, why are the monies for “deferred maintenance and repairs” not included in each year’s budget. Could it be that monies that should have gone for “deferred maintenance, etc., were used to pay for unnecessary staff and funding programs that have no relationship to educating students.

Having a levy passed is the district’s version of winning the lottery.
