PRAYER: Welcome them all
Just about the time that I think Coeur d’Alene has reached the height of stupidity, someone comes along and proves me wrong.
I’m referring to the Easter Sunday issue of the Coeur d’Alene Press article about only certain denominations of Christian church are approved and allowed to give the invocation before the City Council meetings. Catholics and Mormons need not apply. REALLY?
I guess our religious leaders have forgotten that the Catholic Church has been around for 2,000 years and worships the same god that they do. Mormons are also Christian.
In this country, we have freedom of religion, that means ALL religions. My own feeling is if you are going to open the City Council meetings with an invocation it needs to rotate with all faiths having the option of giving a brief invocation not just a few “approved” churches or pastors.
I also think having an invocation at the start of a City Council meeting, which is a government function, is skating awfully close to the separation of church from state that we have in this country. I am not anti-religion but I believe in a good strong separation of church from state.
