Come and get your free compost

| April 22, 2022 10:45 AM

The city of Coeur d'Alene will be giving out free compost this weekend.

People are welcome to bring shovels and buckets and collect compost from piles outside the fence line at the city's compost facility, 3500 N. Julia St.

"It is here that the annual average of 18,000 wet-pounds per day, 365 days per year, of biosolids are processed during the 51-day journey through the plant," according to the city.

This is the city's fifth annual Free Compost Weekend. Coeur d'Alene has been composting biosolids, a product of the wastewater treatment process, since 1990.

Known as Coeur d’Green, the city-made compost is sold at three area nurseries, but for two days this weekend it's free "to give your garden a head start this growing season."

An Earth Day celebration is scheduled 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Coeur d'Alene Public Library, with exhibitors and demonstrations.

Other Earth Day activities in the area include a shoreline cleanup at Independence Point at 11 a.m. hosted by the Kootenai Environmental Alliance.
