PREP BASEBALL: Trojans rally past Bulldogs to finish off sweep

| April 17, 2022 1:20 AM

SANDPOINT — Langan Naylor hit a two-run single to score Caleb Elliott and Tyson Rutherford to rally the Post Falls Trojans past the Sandpoint Bulldogs 9-7 in the second game to complete a sweep of an Inland Empire League doubleheader on Saturday at Memorial Field.

Rutherford doubled to score Jake Bustamante to tie the game at 5-5, then Naylor gave the Trojans the lead for good with his two-run single with one out.

Jack Zimmerman and Brady Newhart had two runs scored each for Sandpoint in the second game.

Earlier, Dom Wilburn had three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs as the Trojans beat the Bulldogs 15-1.

“We played a solid game in the first game,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “The second game, we came out and started hot, then went flat. We had a lot of mistakes and mental errors and Sandpoint battled the entire way. We were fortunate to win that second game. Sandpoint did a good job of putting the ball in play and we didn’t make the plays we should have.”

“Right now, it’s a roller coaster,” Sandpoint coach Chase Tigert said. “We have highs where we do everything we’re capable of, and then we have lows where we have severe drops.”

Post Falls (7-5, 5-3 IEL) travels to Lakeland on Tuesday.

Sandpoint (2-5, 0-4) travels to Lakeland on Thursday.

PRIEST RIVER — Caden Robinett had two hits and four RBIs, Kenny Wells and Cooper Lenz three RBIs each for the Tigers in the first game of an Intermountain League doubleheader at Priest River High.

Lenz and Borges scored three runs each for Timberlake, which used a six-run sixth inning to put the first game out of reach.

“It took us a bit to get going today,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “We started being more patient at the plate and found a way to get those big hits that we were missing in the first few innings.”

In the nightcap, Andrew Horn, who had three hits, three runs scored and three RBIs in the second game, scored on a bases loaded walk in the top of the eighth inning to push the Tigers to the sweep.

“Andrew’s been huge for us all season,” Johnson said. “I don’t know where we’d be without him. He just steps into any situation and gets the job done.”

Everett Hannah struck out nine in the second game for Priest River.

“He’s a good pitcher and threw a lot of strikes,” Johnson said of Hannah. “He threw the ball really well today.”

The Spartans committed nine errors in the doubleheader.

“It’s hard to win with that many errors,” Priest River coach Mark Schultz said. “We’re so young, but this will help us down the line. We just had a combination of some errors and some hit batters. Timberlake managed to jump on it.”

On Tuesday, Timberlake (8-2, 4-0 IML) hosts Bonners Ferry and Priest River (2-8, 0-4) visits Kellogg in a pair of doubleheaders.

“Kellogg, they’re a good ballclub this year … they’re bigger, they’re playing the game right, they are swinging the bats, and they have decent pitching,” Bonners Ferry coach Tom Turpin said. “Basically, Kellogg came to play. Hats off to them.”

In the first game, Reed Whatcott singled to lead off the eighth and scored the go-ahead run on an error for Kellogg (3-5-1, 2-2 IML).

Bonners Ferry (5-9, 2-2) had tied it with six runs in the bottom of the seventh, started with a three-run double by Roger Naylor and sacrifice flies from Trey Bateman and Blake Rice that tied it.

In the second game, Meredith hit a two-run triple in the third inning and a three-run double in the fifth for Kellogg.
