Students at Post Falls High School are preparing to take the audience on a little trip into the woods.

Their show, “Into the Woods Jr.” opens today, offering a different way to think about favorite fairytale characters.

"This is my first musical that I've produced at Post Falls, and it has been a lot of work yet so rewarding," said director Kirsten Maas. "I am thrilled at how the students have been so enthusiastic and all their hard work is paying off."

A total of 20 student actors, and 20 student technicians have been working on the show since late January. The students have been rehearsing between for a few hours a day five days a week to learn the music, choreography, blocking, and characterization.

“Into the Woods Jr.” is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International, one of the world's leading theatrical licensing agencies.

With the book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheimis, “Into the Woods Jr.” is based on the Broadway production which won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical.

The musical follows a baker and his wife who learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door. The couple embarks on a quest — swindling, deceiving and stealing from such already-victimized characters as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack (fresh off the beanstalk) – to get the special objects required to break the spell.

However, the story doesn’t simply end “happily ever after” as each character must now face the consequences of his/her decision.

Show times are today at 7 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., April 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., and April 24 at 2 p.m. Doors open a half hour before shows.

Shows will take place in the Post Falls High School auditorium on Poleline Avenue.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door or for pre-purchase at the Post Falls High School Business Office.
