Parents sound off

| September 29, 2021 1:00 AM

Within 30 minutes of Chair Jennifer Brumley's message to CDA school district patrons Tuesday, email responses flooded into the communications office.

From a Press public records request, here's a small sampling of what parents wanted the board and administration to hear.

Your fear is well-founded. But be sure to balance that with the fear that students feel at school who dare to wear a mask to protect themselves and others. You are adults with resources and plenty of support. These are minors. I have one child afraid to wear a mask--even though he wants to--because none of his friends or teachers do. I have another child who wears a mask despite being only one of maybe a handful of other kids wearing masks. That child struggles deeply with depression and anxiety, much of it stemming from the backwards mentality of people around here who view it as a "right" to choose NOT to protect others and therefore CHOOSE to harm.

You guys are letting the bullies have power and you are reinforcing their negative, destructive, antagonistic behavior by not even addressing masking at your next meeting. Call a special meeting held by Zoom where people can make their public comments via email or the Zoom chat box. It's that simple.

It can't be the wrong choice to mandate masks for the protection of our community. How many more will die? How many KIDS might not be able to receive care because of our overcrowded hospital? How many PREVENTABLE deaths have already occurred and how many more will there be?

Hanging by a thread to hope,

Ashlie Unruh

Please know that responsible people in our area are aware that your role is difficult and sometimes scary, unfortunately with the radicals moving to our area, there is a loud minority causing unrest.

Ultimately the safety of our children should be number one in everyone's eyes, but it seems to be more about people's rights being taken away from them.

Nothing is easy these days, but it is easy for my family and I to back you and your decisions, children and your staff need to be taken care of.

Thank you,

Brandon Bemis

Stop the madness and the mandates! Stop holdings meetings to discuss it! Stop reconsidering it all the time. NO MASKS!

If no threats were made, why would you have safety concerns? Please stop with the mainstream narrative and serve the constituents you’ve been elected by. The right to PEACEFULLY object is God given and you should be ashamed of yourselves. If you can’t deal with opposition, please resign.

Do the right thing. Leave the CHILDREN alone. Your job is to teach, not indoctrinate or “protect”.

Hello. I just read the release from Chair Brumley regarding the cancellation (and not rescheduling) of the board meeting from last week.

First of all I want to say I do not envy a single one of you and the very difficult position you are all in right now. I know how I felt watching the videos from the outside of the building during the scheduled meeting time. I cannot begin to imagine what it felt like being inside and hearing what was going on. Thank you for all you do for our children.

However, I am very concerned the unfortunate side effect of not rescheduling due to the angry mob will be reinforcing that despicable behavior. Don't like masks? Threaten the board. Don't want something taught in the schools? Threaten the board. Want more funding for football? Threaten the board.

I do hope you can find a way to conduct business for the greater good of all our children without succumbing to the threats of the few.

School Board and Staff,

As a Single Parent of 5 kids that enjoy the Cda School System with high marks and are well adjusted...

I wish to say "Thank you all for your service and helping us to raise our families and communities.”

You’re doing a great job and are valued.

Jon Kimball

I’m sure you get hundreds of emails from people angry about mask mandates, etc. We are a family sitting somewhere in the middle of all of this. We understand concerns on both sides, but also wish to do our best to help protect others. We’re willing to mask up if required, but fine if we don’t have to.

I’m writing solely to thank you all for your courageous service to our school district during these volatile times. I am saddened to see the anger and vitriol that has been spread over this whole pandemic, especially here at home. We know you are all taking a lot of heat for things, but just want you to know that you are appreciated by a more silent majority. We stand by your decisions whatever you end up doing, and appreciate the time and energy you put into serving our community and children. Thank you, because you probably don’t hear it often enough.

-Jessica and Seth King and family

I have a daughter in kindergarten this year and we are currently in quarantine/isolation due to covid. So many children and members of the community are getting sick.

As far as masks go- I think that it is important to use the scientific data provided regarding mask usage. Opinions are not going to get us through this pandemic safely.

Thank you for all of your hard work,

Jennifer Rainey
