GIRLS

SPIRIT LAKE — Junior Charley Hegstad scored a hat trick as the Timberlake Tigers rolled past the visiting Grangeville Bulldogs 9-1 in a soggy Intermountain League girls soccer match Monday.

“Charley was really dialed in with her longer shots tonight,” Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. “It was a very wet match and we needed to test the Grangeville goalkeeper on how she handled the ball.”

Kiersten Sawley added two goals, one on a penalty kick, for Timberlake (7-2, 5-1 IML), which won 5-2 at Grangeville on Saturday.

“We were still struggling with moving the ball around in the first half. The rain became a big factor early,” Michael said. “Very happy with our goalkeeper tonight (Tapanga Rojas) with her first game back since last season. She was able to play high enough to slow their attack down in this weather. We played defense well and are starting to play better as a team. The ladies are starting to trust each other more and playing better as a team. I am encouraged by their development moving forward.”

Michael said Rojas was a field player and backup keeper last season, and with starting goalkeeper Ella Nunn out for the season, "we are looking for answers in that position."

Timberlake plays host to Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy tonight at 7.
