CONSTITUTION WEEK SPOTLIGHT

| September 23, 2021 1:00 AM

Today is the last day of Constitution Week.

Article V of the Constitution lays out the process for adding an amendment to the Constitution. An amendment may be proposed by a two-thirds vote in Congress or by a national convention of two-thirds of the states. The proposals must be ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures or by state conventions in three-fourths of the states to become amendments to the Constitution.

There have been 27 amendments to the Constitution since it was ratified in 1788. The first 10 amendments, collectively known as the Bill of Rights, were added in 1791. Since then, 17 more amendments have been added. Several of these deal with the right to vote.

Notable Quote: "The Constitution of the United States was made not merely for the generation that then existed, but for posterity - unlimited, undefined, endless, perpetual posterity." — Henry Clay
