Applesauce made with love wins big

| September 22, 2021 1:00 AM

Since the tragic loss of their 7-year-old daughter, Anna, to cancer in 2010, Joe and Polly Schindler have been passionately and positively impacting the lives of other children and their families through the Anna Schindler Foundation.

This month the 11th Annual Anna Schindler Memorial Golf Tournament took place at the Links Golf Course and included a live auction. Each year a popular auction item is Joe’s (Schindler) Famous Applesauce. Last year 3-quart jars sold for $300 each.

Friend of the Schindlers and professional auctioneer Randy Wells shared that there may have been some kind of record set for the winning bid on a single quart of Joe’s homemade applesauce this year. When the dust settled in the auction ring, Randy happily called out “SOLD!” to the bid of $15,000!

I didn’t know sweet Anna, but I do know that for the past decade the impact of her too-short life has been enormous. That little girl was blessed to have such kind and giving parents. I’m thinking that Anna is smiling down every day on her family.

The first day of school, the day after Labor Day, social media was flooded with first day of school photos of kindergartners through college students. It’s always a fun array of spit-shined, new clothes-garbed kiddos being good sports to pose for their parents on the way out the door.

But winning the internet on that day were Kareen and Greg Link, pictured lounging on their boat on the lake on a sunny Tuesday afternoon with the hashtag #emptynesters.

Well played Links!

I’ve not yet surrendered to the end of summer by draining the pool and putting the floaties and patio furniture into the storage shed. While I truly enjoy fall, I love summer best. Everywhere in our neck of the woods, pools, cabins and river campsites are being closed, boats coming out of the lake and into storage.

The collective sigh of lovers of summer can be heard for miles.
